The Three Lions were denied the opportunity to force the game into extra-time with their talisman missing a vital spot-kick.

England have crashed out of the 2022 FIFA World Cup after Harry Kane missed a crucial penalty kick to hand them a lifeline in Saturday's quarter-final clash with France. The Three Lions' skipper skied his effort to deny them an equalizer as Les Bleus ran away with a 2-1 victory inside Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor.

After reaching the semi-finals in the 2018 edition of the World Cup held in Russia, there was high optimism for Gareth Southgate's men to better the feat by securing a final berth this time around. However, the test was far from an easy one considering they were coming against defending champions France in their last eight encounter.

The complexity of the test became prevalent when Aurelien Tchouameni smashed home an early thunderbolt to give Les Bleus the edge. However, the Real Madrid midfielder forced his side to pay a hefty price after given away a penalty in the second half. The chance was subsequently converted by Harry Kane as he equalled Wayne Rooney's record as England's all-time top goalscorer.

12 minutes before full-time, France's all-time scorer Olivier Giroud scored what will become the eventual winner before Kane blasted a late penalty over the bar to condemn England to a quarter-final exit. Watch:

The night's result meant that England have been eliminated from the quarter-final stages of the World Cup seven times, more than any other side in the history of the competition.
