Lionel Messi launched a stinging attack on a player from the Netherlands camp after his Argentina side progressed to the semi-final of the ongoing World Cup. The 35-year-old added to the night's drama by calling his target a 'fool' ahead of a post-match interview.

As anticipated, the quarter-final clash between the Albiceleste and the Oranje proved to be a feisty one with both sides going at it in search of supremacy. While the battled endured for over 120 minutes with many twists, it was the South American who had the last laugh, winning 4-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw. Nevertheless, the moment did not arrive on a silver platter with Louis van Gaal's charges giving them a tough time both on and off the pitch.

The drama kicked off in style after Lionel Messi celebrated his goal from the penalty spot by cupping his ears right in front of Louis van Gaal and the Netherlands bench. In that moment, the Paris Saint-Germain star had given Argentina a two-goal lead with a little over 15 minutes left. However, the lead vanished in a twinkle of an eye and the Dutch were brought back into the game through two late goals by substitute Wout Weghourst.

In hindsight, Lionel Messi was fairly taunted throughout the proceeding and was in the mix of a series of altercations. Before the game concluded, Leandro Parades also instigated a brawl for the two benches to clash.

After celebrating the win after the shootout, Messi was pictured in an animated discussion involving Edgar Davies and Louis van Gaal in the Netherlands dugout while being held by a Dutch official. The reaction is believed to have been as a result of the former Manchester United boss' criticism of the PSG star ahead of the night's encounter.

After the episode, the former Barcelona superstar continued his tongue-lashing by targeting another member of the Dutch team. Before his post-match interview with TyC Sports, the irate playmaker was caught on camera calling another target a 'fool'. "What are you looking at," he said. "Get the h*ll out of here, fool!"

According to Gol Mundial, the player who was on the receiving end of the burst out was Wout Weghourst. However, it remains unknown what led to the Argentine skipper's reaction.
