Senegal have hit the end of the road at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. After bouncing back from their opening-day defeat to the Netherlands, the Lions of Teranga qualified out of Group A for the round of 16 but saw their campaign ended by high-flying England.
Goals from Jordan Henderson, Harry Kane, and Bukayo Saka handed the champions of Africa a 3-0 defeat. However, while the day ended in heartbreak for Senegal, Koulibaly and Co. were met with some kind words from their talisman Sadio Mane.
The Bayern Munich star, who sadly missed out on this tournament due to injury, posted a heartfelt message for his comrades in the wake of Sunday's defeat. The former Liverpool ace took to Instagram to express the immense pride he had for his teammates after their campaign to make it to the last eight.
"Dear brothers, the people are very proud of your journey and you have put the balm in the hearts of Senegalese and all supporters by defending the national flag with dignity," the winger wrote.
"Continue learning and good luck. We will go in search of more trophies Inshallah (if God wills)."
The loss of Mane, who played a crucial role in Senegal's qualification for Qatar 2022, was a huge blow. The 30-year-old has scored 34 goals in 93 apps for his country and could have offered a lot more going forward against England.
Nonetheless, the Three Lions were impressive in that round of 16 fixture, dominating the proceedings while registering a third consecutive clean sheet. Southgate's men now move on to their next challenge: a tricky quarterfinal showdown with defending champions and favorites for the title, France.
Senegal, meanwhile, return home in what has been an eventful calendar year. After winning the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in history back in February, the Lions of Teranga went on to qualify for the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time since their unforgettable 2002 campaign.
