Portugal will look to recover from a shock 2-1 win against South Korea as they aim to book a quarter-finals berth for the first time since 2006.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup round of 16 will come to its conclusion as Portugal face Switzerland for the last spot in the round of 16. So far, several teams, including the Netherlands, Argentina, France, and England have already booked their spots, and two more will be joining them following the conclusion of Monday's Japan vs. Croatia and Brazil vs. Korea ties.

Portugal come into this match having lost 2-1 to Korea on matchday three, a rather surprising result, to say the least. That defeat marks the first time the EURO 2016 winners have taken a lead at a World Cup and failed to win their match; prior to this, they had earned 15 wins and three draws in this competition when holding a 1-0 advantage. While it didn't have any impact on Portugal, who had already qualified for the round of 16 following a 3-2 win over Ghana and a 2-0 victory against Uruguay, it is not the way that Fernando Santos's side surely would have wanted to prepare for their foray into the round of 16.

Santos will be hoping to help steer his side into the quarter-finals, a place Portugal have not reached since 2006. In their way will stand a very determined Switzerland side who may not have likes of superstar Cristiano Ronaldo in their ranks, but are a very solid unit who will be looking to make history. La Nati come into this match having won two of their group stage matches - the only blemish being a narrow 1-0 loss to Brazil - and are hoping to win three games at a World Cup for the first time in their country's history.

Murat Yakin's side will certainly look to take advantage of a Portugal defense that has been suspect at times; this was shown by the way they conceded twice against South Korea to go from leading 1-0 to losing 2-1. Should they defeat their upcoming opponents, Switzerland will book their place in the quarter-finals for the first time in 1954, when they served as hosts.

Both sides will be looking to feature in the final eight; in the case of Portugal, it's been nearly two decades, while Switzerland have been absent from the quarter-finals for over half a century. Only one of these sides will be able to prevail, and after 90 minutes, or possibly more, we all will know whether it will be Portugal or Switzerland joining the seven other teams looking to do battle for a coveted spot in the semi-finals - and perhaps beyond.
