Senegal reportedly under investigation by FIFA

2022 FIFA World Cup: Concern for Senegal as FIFA open investigation

December 1, 2022 By Michelle Bonsu
The newly-crowned AFCON champions will face England in the round of 16 of this year's World Cup, but may have some concerns heading into the clash.

Earlier this week, Senegal booked their spot in the round of 16 after earning a well-deserved 2-1 victory over Ecuador. Goals from Ismaila Sarr and Kalidou Koulibaly were enough to give the newly-crowned AFCON champions all three points and finish as runners-up in Group A.

That has set up a clash against England, who won Group B, in a round of 16 match-up this weekend, but ahead of that game, there are reportedly some concerns for the Senegal side.

As per multiple reports, namely British publication The Mirror, FIFA are apparently investigating the African nation for a potential breach of conduct, and had, as of Wednesday, decided to open disciplinary proceedings against the team.

Interestingly, it's not because of anything Senegal did on the pitch, but apparently off it.

FIFA's rules state that during a press conference, the coach is required to be joined by at least one player from his squad.

On Monday, Senegal head coach Aliou Cisse sat down with the media and chatted with journalists for a bit under 45 minutes, but was not accompanied by any of his players for some reason.

If found guilty of this infraction, Senegal would end up being fined approximately $10,600 (£8,800). They would not be the first team to be hit with a fine, as Germany were also fined around the same amount after Hansi Flick refused to have a player join him ahead of Germany's match against Spain during his press conference.

Despite this looming, Senegal certainly will not be keen to allow it to serve as any sort of distraction as they prepare for their showdown against England this weekend. The Lions of Teranga are looking to book their spot in the quarter-finals for the first time since 2002, but could face a tough test against an England side who scored nine goals during their group stage match while conceding just twice.
