World Cup 2022: Permutations for Group C

PERMUTATIONS: How things in Group C could unfold following Wednesday's games

November 29, 2022 By Oscar Rojas
Everything's to play for in Group C of the FIFA World Cup. Here is what each team needs to do to reach the next stage.

Argentina, Poland, Saudi Arabia and Mexico were included in one of the hottest groups of the FIFA World Cup, but things took a dramatic turn as the games between these teams unfolded.

When Saudi Arabia defeated Argentina, the team from the Middle East accomplished two things: shocking La Albiceleste fans all over the globe while turning all the odds in this group upside down. Now, we have to double check what each team needs before the end of the group stage to find out which of them might go through to the next round.

First of all, let us have a look at the group prior to Wednesday's games.

Now, let us get to what each team needs as they are currently ranked.

Poland

The Orly are the only unbeaten team and the only ones yet to concede goals, which puts them in pole position to reach one of the tickets for the next round. Poland would go through in first place if they beat Argentina, or if they draw against La Albiceleste and there is not a winner in the other game. In the event of a loss, Poland would need to keep their goal as safe as possible in order to avoid being leapfrogged by Mexico or Saudi Arabia.

Argentina

La Albiceleste's win over Mexico gave them a great chance to control their future...but not quite. The Argentine's still need to win their game to secure a spot in the next round, but winning the top spot would depend on the winner of the other tie. In the event of a draw, Argentina would need a similar result on the other game or a win by Mexico, as long as El Tri does not score more than three goals. A loss for La Albiceleste could have a devastating effect to their options, especially if they lose by two and Saudi Arabia and Mexico draw their game.

Saudi Arabia

The Middle Eastern team could shock the world one more time if they can manage to reach the next round. For that to happen, the Arabian team needs to win their game against Mexico, the only result that would grant them a spot in the next round regardless of the outcome of the other match. If the Arabians draw against Mexico, the easiest way for them to make it to the next round would be with Argentina losing their match against Poland. In the event of a loss, Saudi Arabia would be eliminated from the tournament.

Mexico

With only one point after two games, Mexico are forced to win their game to keep their hopes alive, and the larger their victory margin is, the better shot they will have at reaching the next stage. Mexico's calculations require them to win by four goals, which would see them surpass Poland or Argentina if they end up with the same number of points as those teams. In case they can't win by four, the easiest path for them would be for Argentina to lose the game to beat them by points. A loss or a draw will kick El Tri out of the tournament.
