Bruno Fernandes lands World Cup milestone with brace vs Uruguay

November 28, 2022 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Portuguese attacker entered the competition's record book for his contributions for his side.

Bruno Fernandes has secured a World Cup milestone with his contribution for Portugal in Monday night's Group H clash with Uruguay. The 28-year-old playmaker hit a brace to inspire the Selecao to a deserved 2-0 win as they secured a spot in the knockout stage of the tournament.

The Manchester United attacker went into Portugal's second group encounter having assisted two of the three goals they scored in the win over Ghana. Against Uruguay, he broke the deadlock for his side inside the 54th minute with what many perceived as a cross intended for Cristiano Ronaldo. The latter had previously claimed the goal with an upclose shot revealing that the ball might have made a slight contact with his hair before beating Rochet in Uruguay's goal.

With the help of the Video Assistant Referee, Fernandes earned a penalty for Portugal in the 90th minute after the ball made contact with the arm of Jose Gimenez. He subsequently stepped up to convert for his second goal of the night as the Selecao booked their spot in the Round of 16 with a game to spare.

As things stand, Bruno Fernandes has been directly involved in four goals in this World Cup with two goals and two assists, a joint-record alongside Mbappé so far. No Portuguese player has been directly involved in more goals in a single World Cup edition in the 21st century. The Manchester United superstar has scored seven times in 11 appearances for Portugal across 2022 so far – more than twice as many as any other Portuguese player, above Ronaldo (three).
