South Korea manager sent off in 3-2 loss vs. Ghana

FIFA World Cup: South Korea manager sent off at full-time as Kudus leads Ghana to unforgettable 3-2 win

November 28, 2022 By Ali M.
Paulo Bento was shown a straight red after the final whistle after losing his cool with referee Anthony Taylor. Here's what sparked this incident.

South Korea manager Paulo Bento was sent off after the final whistle in their action-packed FIFA World Cup showdown with Ghana as tempers flared after the final whistle.

The Asian and African giants locked horns in this Group H clash as both sides went in search of their first win of the tournament. The Taegeuk Warriors drew 0-0 in their opening fixture against Uruguay while the Black Stars lost 3-2 to Portugal.

And little did we know the excitement that was set to go down in this fixture. The four-time AFCON champions marched into a 2-0 lead within 34 minutes and appeared to be in cruise control for the remainder of the tie. However, in the span of three second-half minutes, South Korea shocked everyone as Cho Gue-sung scored twice in the blink of an eye to pull his team back level.

Unfortunately for the Asian powerhouse, Mohammed Kudus stepped up to the plate and reclaimed the lead for Ghana. The Ajax talent, who got on the scoresheet in the first half, completed his brace in what turned out to be the match-winner. Check out his goal in the clips below (videos are geo-restricted).

And just like that, Kudus reached two brilliant milestones. The 22-year-old – 22 years and 118 days old, to be exact – became the second-youngest African player to score two goals in a single FIFA World Cup match after Ahmed Musa (21y 254d) for Nigeria against Argentina in 2014. Additionally, he is also the first Ghanaian to pull off this feat.

From that point onward, it was all about South Korea. Son and Co. threw everything at the Black Stars in search of an equalizer and besieged Ghana's backline with numerous crosses in the final few minutes.

Unfortunately for Paulo Bento's men, they could not find the back of the net. Things got worse at the final whistle as the Taegeuk Warriors boss was shown a red card after losing his temper with the referee. The Portuguese tactician, as well as his players, were enraged as Anthony Taylor blew for full-time despite South Korea winning a corner kick and Bento was unable to control his emotions.

This means the Asian giants will face Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal in their final group-stage match without their manager in the dugout needing a win in order to avoid an early elimination. This should make for an exciting finale for this group.
