The match between Iran and the USA has reached new levels of tension after the US Soccer Federation posted an incorrect Iranian flag on social media.

On Tuesday, the USMNT will take on Iran with more than just three points on the line.

The Stars and Stripes come into this match having earned just two points following draws against Wales and England, while Iran have earned three following their shock 2-0 win over Wales.

With a spot in the knockout rounds at stake, this match will be quite the must-see game, but given the history between Iran and the USA, there is plenty of tension brimming behind the scenes.

Not only will it be a rematch of 1998, when Iran beat the USA 1-0, but now, after some latest rumblings, Iran have reacted in fury towards their upcoming opponents.

It all stems from a decision by US Soccer to post a graphic featuring the four teams' rankings in Group B. Eagle-eyed followers noted a curious decision regarding Iran's flag, as can be seen here:

If one isn't aware, it is not the correct image of Iran's flag, as the emblem of the Islamic Republic is missing.

As can be seen here, in another image from the US Soccer Federation's social channels, the correct logo is displayed here:

Of course, this wasn't enough to appease furious Iranians, with one of the country's biggest media channels stating on their Twitter channel "By posting a distorted image of the flag of the Islamic Republic of #Iran on its official account, the #US football team breached the @FIFAcom charter, for which a 10-game suspension is the appropriate penalty".

The news agency went on to add that as a result of these actions, "Team #USA should be kicked out of the #WorldCup2022".

FIFA have not commented on this manner, and it's highly doubtful that the USA will be kicked out of the World Cup or face any repercussions for upsetting Iran.

However, it's safe to say it has added a whole new layer to things ahead of Tuesday's game, and Iran will be even more fired up to beat Team USA and book their spot in the round of 16 for the first time in the nation's history.

Will the USA be able to put this behind them and pick up a much needed win? We will have to wait and see.
