Bundesliga Round-up after May 16 games

Bundesliga Round-up: Lewandowski equals record as Dortmund secure UCL spot

May 17, 2021 By Oscar Rojas
With all UCL spots assigned, all that's left to determine are certain European tournament spots and the battle to avoid relegation.

The 2020-21 Bundesliga season is one game away from its conclusion, and there will still be quite a few things to keep an eye on for football fans.

The title race had come to a close last weekend with Bayern's win, but the chasing pack still had to hand out the remaining spots to play in European competitions. Added to that, the battle to avoid relegation will gather most headlines during the next weekend.

Let's have a look at what happened over this weekend's round of fixtures.

Top five teams in the Bundesliga up to May 16

Bayern added one more point to their tally with a draw against Freiburg, while RB Leipzig followed suit with a similar result against Wolfsburg. Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund managed to leapfrog the Wolves to earn the third spot in the league with their 3-1 victory over Mainz. This means that Bayern, RB Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund and Wolfsburg have all secured their spots in next year's UEFA Champions League.

Who are the top three scorers in the Bundesliga?

Robert Lewandowski maintained his lead at the top with one more goal against Freiburg, while André Silva also bagged one in Frankfurt's 4-3 loss to Schalke. Despite playing the full match, Erling Haaland was not able to score a single goal for Borussia Dortmund, leaving his tally in 25 goals.

Top Bundesliga headlines

Robert Lewandowski matches goalscoring record: The Polish ace is now the joint-top scorer in a single Bundesliga season with his goal against Freiburg. Needless to say, his 40 goals will also hand him the European Golden Boot and will also boost his chances of winning the Ballon D'Or.

Dortmund nab UEFA Champions League spot: With a change in command this season and with uncertainty after dealing with several injuries this season, Borussia Dortmund can finally stay calm after nabbing a Champions League berth for next season. The cash prize they have earned due to that fact will also give them a chance to keep some of their top players around...especially Erling Braut Haaland.

Andre Silva makes history at Eintracht Frankfurt: The former AC Milan striker has found a new home in Frankfurt, and what better way to celebrate it than earning a record for most goals scored in a single season with the red and black side. His form has earned him praise from some of the top teams in Europe, which may see him leaving the Eagles this summer if the right offer comes along.

Top Bundesliga matches on May 22, 2021

Bayern vs Augsburg: The Bundesliga champions are ready to bid farewell to Hansi Flick, who will leave the club after this game. But that will not be the only thing to keep in mind, as Robert Lewandowski will want to establish a new goalscoring record in the league, and he only needs one goal to do so.

Köln vs Schalke 04: The Billy Goats need a win to avoid relegation, and while facing the already relegated Schalke may seem as an advantage, the team's poor form in their last games has fans fearing the worst-case scenario could come. In order to save themselves, Köln must win and wait for Arminia Bielefed and Werder Bremen to lose their games.

Werder Bremen vs Borussia Mönchengladbach: The Green-Whites are one point behind Arminia, and winning their game could be enough to leave the relegation playoff spot they have right now. Nevertheless, getting all the points from their game will not be easy, as Borussia Mönchengladbach are still in contention for a European competition spot for next season, and in the event of a loss they may end up being relegated without the chance of saving themselves in the playoff round.
