Inter may have already won the Scudetto a few rounds back, but there's still plenty to play for in Serie A as there are three Champions League spots to be decided. Juventus, AC Milan, and Napoli are battling to secure places for themselves, but all three of these teams won't be able to compete in Europe's premier club tournament with Atalanta determined to hang on to second place at all costs.
Meanwhile, the latest installment of the Derby della Capitale took place, and outgoing Roma boss Paulo Fonesca was certainly determined to sign off on a high note before Jose Mourinho takes over next season.
Let's have a look at what happened over this weekend's round of fixtures.
Top five teams in Serie A up to May 17
The battle for a top four spot will go down to the wire on matchday 38, as Juventus, Napoli, and AC Milan will all hope to feature in the Champions League next year. However, Atalanta, who are desperately hanging onto second spot, will be really fighting tooth and nail to make sure they're safely into the Champions League for next season
Who are the top three scorers in Serie A?
Although he wasn't able to help fire his side to a tenth straight Scudetto, Cristiano Ronaldo will win the Capocannoniere this season in what likely could be his last term with Juventus
Top Serie A headlines
Inter suffer first loss in a very long time: Although Inter lost last weekend during a five-goal thriller, it's a moot point as far at the Nerazzurri are concerned. Yes, it's never great to lose in the Derby d'Italia, but Inter have already won the Scudetto while Juventus are now scrambling to qualify for the Champions League next season. The loss to Juventus marks only the third defeat for Antonio Conte's men and only their second of 2021 - an impressive feat for Inter, who now are 10 points clear of the chasing pack in what's been an excellent season as they've won their first league title since 2010.
Crotone's Simy continues to shine: His team may have been relegated as they've conceded a whopping 92 goals (more than any team have in Serie A since Casale shipped 91 during the 1933/34 term), but Simy continues to impress. At this point, it's hard to see how the Squali will be able to hang on to him beyond the summer. This weekend saw the Nigerian international score his 20th goal of the season as Crotone salvaged a draw against Benevento, and puts him in good stead as he's now joined some very elite company:
20 - #Simy is the second ever African player to score 20+ goals in a single Serie A campaign after Samuel Eto'o in 2010/11 (21 goals with Inter). Unstoppable.#BeneventoCrotone pic.twitter.com/D0LhKgG7Xu

No home pitch comforts for Milan this season: Milan may be doing their best to hang on to a top four spot, but their home form leaves something to be desired. It's those struggles at the Stadio San Siro that have cost the Rossoneri dearly, as they went from leading the league table to now having to battle with Juventus and Napoli for a top four spot. Last weekend saw Milan suffer another major blow, as they were held to a frustrating draw with Cagliari. It's the first time the Diavolo were unable to score at home against the Sardinian outfit since June 1997, and fans will hope those two wasted points won't come back to haunt them as they travel to face Atalanta for matchday 38 this weekend.
Pedro breaks a record in Derby della Capitale: The former Barcelona and Chelsea man gave Roma fans something to smile about this weekend as Roma earned a hard-fought 2-0 win and got revenge on cross-town rivals Lazio. Pedro's goal also makes him the oldest ever player to score his debut in the well-known derby clash, topping former Lazio striker Miroslav Klose's record by a few days:
1 - #Pedro is the oldest player ever to have scored his first goal in a Derby between Roma and Lazio in Serie A (33 years, 291 days, overtaking Miroslav Klose at 33 years, 129 days). King.#RomaLazio #SerieA pic.twitter.com/ppoL08SH8v

Top Serie A matches: May 23, 2021
Atalanta vs Milan: This game will prove decisive for Milan. At this point, the Rososneri sit in third spot, and their place in the Champions League isn't locked and secured just yet. They have 76 points, and have Napoli and Juventus breathing down their necks, so Stefano Pioli's men will need to win this tie. Will Milan's strong away form - and a much needed desire for revenge over Atalanta for their earlier loss - be enough to ensure they can get the job done this Sunday?
Bologna vs Juventus: Nothing but a win will be good enough for Juventus if they want to play in the Champions League next season. La Vecchia Signora beat Inter in last weekend's Derby d'Italia match, and although it may have felt satisfying to defeat Antonio Conte's men for snatching the Scudetto, it won't mean anything if Juve don't pick up all three points on Sunday.
