What happened in Ligue 1 this weekend

Ligue 1 Round-up: Title race set to go down to the wire as PSG win, but Lille hang on

May 17, 2021 By Michelle Bonsu
The title race will be decided on the final day as PSG win, but Lille will make sure that Les Parisiens will have to wait till matchday 38 to see if they'll defend their Ligue 1 crown.

The 2020/2021 Ligue 1 season is nearly over, and we still don't know who will be the champion at the conclusion of this campaign! That's right. The winner of this term will be decided on the final match day as we're truly going to have a real grandstand finish.

Let's have a look at what happened over this weekend's round of fixtures.

Top five teams in Ligue 1 up to May 17

Just one point divides reigning champs PSG from Lille. Truly, Les Dogues must be feeling the pressure, but the question is, will they be able to see things through on matchday 38? If the result holds, Lille will win their first title in well over a decade...

Who are the top three scorers in Ligue 1?

Kylian Mbappe has the top scorer prize in Ligue 1 wrapped up as there's no way either of his challengers will unseat him by scoring six goals on matchday 38. We've all seen crazy things happen - like Robert Lewandowski scoring five goals in nine minutes over in the Bundesliga - but that's surely not going to happen next weekend in Ligue 1, is it?

A finish fit for a Hollywood film: It's down to the wire in Ligue 1, and it's the stuff you'll find in a Hollywood film. Just one point divides Lille and PSG heading into matchday 38, and this is something fans haven't seen in quite some time.

How long? Take in well over a decade:

It's going to be a very exciting final matchday, that's for sure!

Top Ligue 1 matches: May 23, 2021

Angers vs Lille: Les Dogues will be keen on winning this match, as they're only one point clear of PSG after drawing their game last round. A loss won't hurt them, as long as PSG don't win their own game, but a win at least will put them on 83 points, meaning that whatever happens in PSG's game won't matter one iota.

Brest vs PSG: Les Parisiens will need to win this game. If they draw, it won't suffice, even if Lille don't beat Angers, so it's win or nothing for Mauricio Pochettino's men. Their match, as well as all the others will be played at 15:00 EST.

Lens vs Monaco: Les Rouges-et-Blancs could cause some interesting results on matchday 38. They're in third spot, on 77 points, so could leap-frog PSG into second. However, they won't win the title because of their inferior goal differential and their head-to-head record against Lille.
