The Mexican team will put an end to their preparations prior to the World Cup with a tough friendly against the Blagult.

Mexico is less than a week away from their debut in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and coach Gerardo Martino will still try to figure things out when it comes to the lineup he will field against Poland. Hence, this clash against Sweden will come in handy for the boss for a large number of purposes.

First off, this will be Mexico's first -and last- friendly with all the players they called up to play the World Cup. Last week, Mexico defeated Irak in a friendly match with a 4-0 score, but their lineup was full of Liga MX players, which means that some of their finest men were not around to play. Now, with the final list being handed in, Martino and his staff will try to find solutions to the team's problems in recent months.

The second fact to keep in mind for Mexico will be Raúl Jiménez's fitness. The Wolverhampton ace barely made it to the World Cup due to a groin problem, and if he is not fit enough, his absence could create a major issue for Martino. This will be Mexico's chance to test Jiménez's availability, meaning that both Henry Martín or Rogelio Funes Mori may still have a shot at playing the opening match against Poland.

Last, but not least, the team is in need of a major confidence boost. El Tri has been harshly criticized by fans and experts due to their lackluster performance in the Qualifiers, and even if it is just a friendly, facing and beating a team that has always dominated El Tri could be one interesting exercise to see if the moods change for Mexican fans ahead of the big competition.

On the other hand, it has been almost eight months since Sweden's World Cup hopes faded away, precisely against the team Mexico will face next week in Qatar. The Blågult went into a massive slump in subsequent international games that saw them getting relegated to League C in the UEFA Nations League system after losing four of their six games in that tournament. That poor form has seen some critics asking for Janne Andersson's resignation, but the Swedish boss is still in command trying to pick up the pieces of a disastrous year.

Speaking of the squad he called up for this game, Andersson decided to summon up some of his finest footballers. Goalie Robin Olsen, captain Victor Lindelof, Manchester United's sensation Anthony Elanga and midfielder Emil Forsberg will all be there for the blue and yellow side, which will try to end the year in proper form ahead of the UEFA Euro 2024 Qualifiers, where they must show their true worth in a group that includes Belgium and Austria as their main rivals.

  • All in all, this will be the eleventh game between these national teams. Sweden have beaten Mexico five times, while El Tri has taken the win home twice.

  • This will be coach Gerardo Martino's first game against Sweden.

  • Swedish boss Janne Andersson will face Mexico for the second time in his career. He was in charge of the Blågult during the 2018 World Cup when the blue and yellow side defeated El Tri.
