WATCH: Goalkeeper Alisson Becker scores 95th minute winner to restore Liverpool's top-four hopes

May 16, 2021 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Brazilian shot-stopper may have secured the future of his side in their Champions League pursuit with a sensational late finish.

In Liverpool's entire club history since they were founded in 1892, no goalkeeper had scored a competitive goal for the club. On Sunday, the Reds' had that dormant piece if record revised after Alisson Becker pulled off the rare happening in an enthralling clash with West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns.

With the top-four hopes of the club in the balance, Liverpool needed to win at all cost against Sam Allardyce's men who were on had their relegation to the Championship confirmed earlier. In playing for pride, the host resorted to making life difficult for the former champions, opening scoring through Hal Robson-Kanu inside the first 15 minutes. 18 minutes later Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane combined to restore parity for Jurgen Klopp's men.

The second half started on a good note for Liverpool although they were less clinical, squandering one goalscoring chance after the other. Against the run of play, Kyle Bartley fired the hosts infront but had his goal ruled out for offside by VAR. Up until the 89th minute mark, the Reds had hit 20 shots with only four finding the target. The moment of salvation came inside the final moments of the four minutes of additional time. With a corner-kick going in favor of the Merseysiders, goalkeeper Alisson Becker run the full length of the pitch and assumed a position inside the opponent's box to potentially connect with Andrew Robertson's cross.

Lady Luck ended up smiling on the shotstopper as he successfully made contact with the ball and extraordinarily beat West Brom's Sam Johnstone at his near post. Watch the goal here:

According to Opta Stats, Alisson is the first to find the net with a headed finish among the six goalkeepers to have scored a goal in Premier League's history. The Brazilian also became the scorer of Liverpool's 38th winning goal in the 90th minute of a Premier League game; 13 more than any other team in the competition's history.

The significance of the goal was huge, with Liverpool now sitting just a point behind fourth-placed Chelsea on the Premier League table. The Blues will go head-to-head in the league with Leicester City on Tuesday night as they aim to avenge their FA Cup loss to the Foxes. A defeat to either of the see could see Jurgen Klopp's men rising into the top-four should they defeat Burnley on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, in an interview after the conclusion of the West Brom-Liverpool encounter, Alisson dedicated his goal to his father who passed away earlier this year.
