El Tri's preparations for the FIFA World Cup begin with this match against the Middle-Eastern side. Follow their clash with this guide.

The FIFA World Cup is just around the corner, and with that in mind, Mexico's National Team has prepares a mini tour to get the team in gear for the competition. That being said, their first warmup match will take place against Iraq, a curious but interesting choice of a rival for Gerardo Martino's men.

Mexico get to this game with two losses in their last three games, which have increased the criticism against the team's boss and players. This version of the Mexican team is not seen by its fans as the one that will see them take the next step in the FIFA World Cup, although this game could give them a chance to start proving their haters wrong.

Coach Gerardo Martino will be forced to use Liga MX players for this clash, as those who play in Europe have not been released by their teams. This should give players such as Kevin Álvarez, César Montes, and Henry Martín a chance to prove their worth and maybe earn a spot in the team's first starting lineup in the World Cup.

The team will also benefit from the experience of goalkeeper Memo Ochoa, Héctor Herrera, and Héctor Moreno, who seem to be locks in Martino's lineup for the next few games, including their World Cup debut against Poland.

As for Iraq, the team led by Jesús Casas is preparing for their run in the Arabian Gulf Cup, which is set to take place in January. Players such as Alai Ghasem (IFK Goteborg), Amir Al-Ammari (Mjällby AIF), and Amjad Attwan will be some of Casas' standout players for this game and for their upcoming friendlies against Ecuador and Costa Rica, which will be played in the next seven days.

This will not be the first match in history between Mexico and Iraq. The first -and only- clash between these teams took place in the 1986 FIFA World Cup, which was held in the North American country. That game saw Mexico claim a one-nil win over the Lions of Mesopotamia, which helped them seal the top spot in their group. Mexican fans will surely want this game to have a similar effect, mainly with El Tri earning the necessary confidence to prove they can reach the next round when playing the World Cup in coming days.
