Spalletti seeking first win over Mourinho

Roma vs Napoli: One manager seeking redemption against former side

October 21, 2022 By Michelle Bonsu
The latest version of Italy's famous Derby del Sole will take place on Saturday, and one manager will have some personal reasons for picking up three points

Napoli are arguably having their best season so far. The Partenopei are on top of the league after a perfect start which has seen them remain unbeaten after ten rounds. With eight wins and two draws, Luciano Spalletti's side hold a two point lead at the table's summit, and are currently four point ahead of upcoming rivals Roma. In Serie A, they have scored 25 times, while conceding just nine, showing that despite losing key players such as Kalidou Koulibaly and Lorenzo Insigne to Chelsea and Toronto respectively, the Southern Italian side are still quite solid both in attack and defense.

In Europe, Napoli have also gone from strength to strength, with four wins from their first four games securing a spot in the round of 16. With 17 goals scored and just four conceded, Napoli's strength in attack and defense clearly is not just only on display in Serie A.

Their blistering form on multiple fronts has many fans buzzing about the possibility that maybe, just maybe, Napoli could be on course for some silverware this season. While it is still very early, Spalletti's side have looked promising and will want to ensure they can continue in this vein for as long as possible. Juventus are the first and only side to complete a 38-game Serie A campaign sans defeat, a feat achieved under Antonio Conte back during the 2011/12 season.

However, ahead of Napoli's upcoming match against Roma, there will be some major concerns. Not only will Spalletti be facing a team that he has a rather turbulent personal history with, but Roma's current manager has caused his own share of troubles for the Italian tactician.

Last season saw the two sides face off and neither could get the better of one another as both matches finished as draws. In addition, during this same tie played at the Stadio Olimpico nearly a year after Sunday's upcoming match on October 23rd (on October 25, 2021), both Spalletti and Mourinho were sent off during a frustrating goalless draw.

Spalletti, thus, will be seeking his first win over Mourinho since the Portuguese manager took over Roma. Will this match, played nearly a year after the draw in the Eternal City help earn him a crucial win, or will the Giallorossi become the first team to beat Napoli across all comps this season?

Fans and calcio neutrals alike surely will not want to miss this game, and below you can find out where to catch this tie in your current location:
