Porto to host this year's Champions League final

Porto to host 2021 Champions League final after UEFA decides switch

May 13, 2021 By Michelle Bonsu
This year's Champions League final was set to be hosted in Turkey, but now will be played in Portugal after UEFA decided to move venues.

Although it's been well over a year since COVID-19 first broke out in Wuhan and spread worldwide, the effects are still being felt.

This season's Champions League final was initially supposed to be played in Istanbul, but Turkey haven't gotten control of the global pandemic. As a result, with both Chelsea and Manchester City set to take part in the event on May 29th, the English government naturally were not comfortable with having the players and supporters travel over there to Turkey with the virus still running rampant across the country.

Prime minister Boris Johnson reportedly was pushing for the event to be hosted at Wembley in London, but now it's been announced that UEFA have decided for another venue. It won't be in England, but rather in Portugal, with Porto's Estadio do Drago stadium serving as hosts for the event.

12,000 spectators will be allowed into the stadium to watch the all-English affair, which will pit Pep Guardiola's Manchester City against Thomas Tuchel's Chelsea. For the Citizens, this will be their first Champions League final and present the first opportunity for Guardiola to win a Champions League trophy outside of his prior victories with Barcelona. And for the Blues, this will be their first final since winning their first and only trophy in 2012 and Tuchel's first European triumph since taking over from Frank Lampard back in January.
