Ligue 1 Round-up after May 9 games

Ligue 1 Round-up: PSG draw paves the way for Lille's title hopes

May 10, 2021 By Oscar Rojas
With two games to go, Lille could clinch the title next weekend if they win their match and Les Parisiens fail to do the same.

There are only two weekends of action left in the French top-flight, and Lille may be closer to their first Ligue 1 title in ten years thanks to their impressive display and an unfortunate draw for PSG. At this point of the season, only a miracle could see Les Dogues missing out on the trophy.

Added to the battle to become champions, teams from the lower part of the table are eager to solve their problems and keep themselves in the French top-flight. Dijon's fate has been sealed, but Nantes and Nimes are still in the battle to avoid relegation.

Without further ado, let's have a look at what went down in the top-tier of French football this weekend.

Top five teams in Ligue 1 until May 9

Lille are now three points clear at the top, with their 3-0 win over Lens playing a huge role in  it. PSG's draw against Rennes has served the title on a platter for Les Dogues, while Monaco keep a glimmer of hope thanks to their one-nil victory over Reims. Lyon are still in contention for a spot in the UEFA Champions League, but they have to wait for a slip-up by Monaco and two wins for them to secure that place.

Ligue 1's Top 3 scorers

Kylian Mbappé seems ready to claim the top scorers' title in this league, with six goals between himself and those closest behind him. Curiously, none of these players scored this weekend.

Ligue 1 - Top headlines

  • Neymar ends transfer rumors and signs four-year contract extension - The Brazilian footballer has put to rest all transfer speculation by putting pen to paper on a four-year deal with Les Parisiens. Now, Neymar will try once and for all to lead PSG to their first-ever Champions League title next year, although the matter regarding who could become his next "sidekick" is yet to be sorted out, with both Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo being tipped to join PSG.

  • PSG's disciplinary problems could cost them the title - We saw it in their UCL clash vs Man City, and we saw it once more this weekend. PSG's discipline problems this season have cost them dearly, and Kimpembe's red card saw them becoming the team with the most red cards after the 80th minute if we consider all top-flight teams in the most relevant leagues in Europe.

  • Key Lille midfielder set to leave the club to join Premier League side - One of Lille's strengths is none other than its midfield, and that attracted the attention of other teams in the continent. Now, according to reports from all over Europe, holding midfielder Boubacary Soumaré will leave the club this summer after reaching an agreement with Leicester City. Only time will tell how damaging this news can be for Christophe Galtier's men.

Top matches to watch in Ligue 1 on May 16, 2021

Being one of the last two matchdays and with the title at stake, all games will be held at the same time.

  • PSG vs Reims - If Pochettino's men want to keep their title hopes alive, they must beat Reims to keep the pressure on Lille. Their previous game of the season ended in a 2-0 win for Les Parisiens, and that sort of result would come in handy for them to keep them in the title race.

  • Lille vs Saint-Etienne - Les Dogues are four points away from winning the title, and beating Saint-Etienne would fit that narrative very well. Their previous fixture this campaign ended in a one-all draw, which means that the green and white side will not make things easier for Gaultier's men next Sunday.

  • Monaco vs Rennes - The red and white side keeps slim hopes of winning the title, and to do so, they must beat Rennes on Sunday evening. The fact that Rennes defeated them 2-1 in their previous clash this season speaks volumes about just how hard it will be for Monaco to claim a win.
