Martínez admits turning down two Spanish giants

Serie A champion with Inter reveals why he turned down Barcelona AND Real Madrid

May 6, 2021 By Oscar Rojas
Lautaro Martínez shared details on how he could have joined both Spanish giants prior to his success with the nerazzurri this season.

Usually, footballer players show their desire to join some of the top teams in the world, especially at a young age, but in this case, Inter Milan ace Lautaro Martínez can brag about how he snubbed offers from Real Madrid and Barcelona...twice.

Speaking in an interview with ESPN, one of Inter Milan's key men for their 2020-21 Serie A title discussed how close he came to joining Barcelona last season. Furthermore, he revealed why those negotiations were dropped by his agent.

"I came really close to joining Barcelona. I even spoke to Leo (Messi) about it, but they had quite a few economic problems and I chose to stay. In the end, everything turned out alright because I stayed here and won the title," Martínez said.

But Martínez did not stop there and revealed how he could have joined Real Madrid even before Barcelona tried to sign him, but the circumstances surrounding his potential deal were enough to discourage him from joining Los Merengues.

"Real Madrid Castilla was coached by Santiago Solari back then and he came looking for me. I had just joined Racing and I did not feel it was the right time to make such a long trip. Years later, when I was not playing that much at Racing, they came knocking and offered me to sign a deal, but I felt I was not ready for that challenge," Martínez added.

In the end, Martínez admitted that his career led to the places he wanted to reach, and the culmination of that dream came last week when Inter were crowned as champions.

"Ever since I was a kid I kept dreaming about becoming a champion. I think I made the right decision by staying here, especially since we won the title. I dreamt about having a family and about winning trophies. Now, I can say 'mission accomplished,'"Martínez concluded.
