EPL roundup: Key points from the recent round

EPL round-up: Man City's title celebrations postponed, Arsenal and Bale enjoy excellent weekend

May 4, 2021 By Ali M.
Man Utd vs Liverpool was unfortunately postponed, but every other Premier League giant was in action over the weekend.

Another round of Premier League fixtures have gone by, with England's traditional big six all enjoying excellent weekend results. Man City took the pitch on Saturday on the back of their impressive 2-1 win at PSG, visiting Crystal Palace in the early kick-off and marching to a comfortable 2-0 victory. The Citizens needed Man United to lose to Liverpool to officially be crowned the champions of England, but that Old Trafford tie was unfortunately postponed after fans broke onto the pitch in protest. London giants Chelsea and Arsenal both registered 2-0 triumphs, beating Fulham and Newcastle respectively, while Tottenham marched to a 4-0 victory over Sheffield thanks to a Gareth Bale hat-trick. Leicester, on the other hand, kicked off this round with a disappointing 1-1 draw against 10-man Southampton in yet another blow to their top four hopes. Here's everything you need to know about the recent round of fixtures.

Premier League top scorer Harry Kane was in action over the weekend but the Englishman failed to get on the scoresheet in Tottenham's 4-0 win over Sheffield United. Mohamed Salah and Bruno Fernandes were not in action as Liverpool's clash with Man Utd was postponed. Heung-Min Son has now moved level with the Portuguese midfielder on 16 goals, but the Red Devils ace holds the advantage.

EPL – top headline

  • Gareth Bale put on another lovely show for Tottenham, scoring a hat-trick in the 4-0 victory. That three-goal haul means he boasts the best minutes-per-goal ratio in the EPL, finding the back of the net every 81 minutes so far this season.

  • Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang made his first start for Arsenal since testing positive for malaria and returned to goalscoring ways, netting his side's second goal in the 2-0 victory over Newcastle. This will come as a huge boost ahead of their crucial Europa League semi-final clash against Villarreal.

  • The above sentiment is true for Sergio Aguero, with the Argentine getting a rate start in the victory over Crystal Palace. The Argentine ace, who is set to depart this summer, got his name on the scoresheet by breaking the deadlock. This is a huge boost ahead of the PSG clash as Guardiola's men could benefit from a natural goalscorer come Tuesday's second leg semi-final tie.

Top matches to watch in the EPL: May 7-10, 2021

Man City vs Chelsea: The Cityzen can officially win the Premier League title in this clash should they beat Chelsea as they need only two more points to lift their four EPL crown in five years. As for the Blues, they are in a heated top-four race and need to avoid as many slip-ups as possible. This tie is made all the more interesting by the fact that they could be this year's UCL finalists.

Aston Villa vs Man United: Dean Smith's side have been one of the most exciting teams this season and it will be interesting to see how they fare against Man United. The Red Devils are second in the league and boost a healthy advantage over third-placed Leicester. The league race could be over by the time the Red Devils take to the field, but with a Europa League final on the cards for Solskjaer's men, Fernandes and Co. will look to keep the momentum going until the final day.

West Ham United vs Everton: This is a crucial fixture in the top four race as West Ham look to go level on points with Chelsea. Given that the Blues will be visiting Man City the day earlier, the Hammers could benefit from the upcoming weekend should Tuchel's side lose and Moyes' men beat the Toffees.
