Lewandowski set to return from injury

Bayern given big boost with goal-scoring machine set to return this weekend

April 23, 2021 By Michelle Bonsu
Will he be able to resume his blistering form as he chases down Gerd Muller's long-standing record?

On Saturday, Bayern will take on Mainz. They're just a victory away from winning their ninth straight league title, as die Roten now are ten points clear.

At one point, the Bundesliga title race was actually looking quite exciting this season, but that died down quickly once Bayern once again seized control of proceedings, and as has been the norm over the past nine years, they haven't looked back since.

Hansi Flick's men have been dumped out of the DFB Pokal and the Champions League, so the Bundesliga title is the only trophy they have let to successfully retain. Flick is set to leave at the end of this season, and he certainly will look to conclude his time at the Allianz Arena on a high note.

Meanwhile, as Flick seeks his second Bundesliga trophy, star player Robert Lewandowski will be seeking a personal milestone of his own. The 32-year-old has been battling his way back to full fitness as he aims to break a record that has been eluding him for the past few seasons: Gerd Muller's. During the 1971/72 campaign, the German icon netted 40 goals in one season, and that has stood since. He's naturally figured would never fall, and it hasn't so far, but Lewandowski has been determined to break it and fans have been hoping to see it eventually break at some point.

So far, the Polish ace has 35 goals, and was looking good to smash it with ease before unfortunately suffering a knee injury on international duty a few weeks ago. He's recovered in record time and according to reports, should be back in the squad for Bayern's upcoming clash with Mainz this weekend.

Bayern have four games left to go, including their tie with away match with Mainz. Given Lewandowski has been out for a month, it's not likely he'll start, but if anyone can score at least five goals in four games, it's the player nicknamed "Lewan-GOAL-ski" by fans all over the world.
