Former Real Madrid man stars as Atleti regain control of La Liga title race

The title race in La Liga is very much back ON as Atleti return to the table's summit with a relatively comfortable 2-0 win over struggling side Huesca.

It's been a tough week for Atletico Madrid, to say the least. On Monday, Los Rojiblancos were among a dozen teams who attempted to breakaway and form another tournament called the European Super League. Less than 48 hours later this competition, spearheaded by personalities like Juventus's Andrea Agnelli and bankrolled by American investment bank JP Morgan, had pretty much collapsed.

Meanwhile, on the pitch, Atleti, who are hoping to win their first La Liga title since 2014, found themselves in danger of slipping out of top spot following a 1-0 loss to Sevilla on April 4th. Cross-town rivals Real Madrid have been on a canter recently, and that includes beating Barcelona 2-1 in a highly anticipated El Clasico clash on April 10th.

An injury to key striker Luis Suarez hasn't helped Diego Simeone's troops one bit, especially as the Uruguayan star has been enjoying an excellent season in the Rojiblancos kit since making the switch from Camp Nou at the start of this season. They've also had to make do without young Portuguese starlet Joao Felix, thus compounding Simeone's selections up front at a crucial point in the current campaign.

However, Atleti have really found their groove recently since Chelsea dumped them out of the Champions League, and after stumbling to a frustrating 1-1 draw with Real Betis, have now picked up back to back wins against Eibar and most recently, Huesca to regain their three point lead on top of the table.

Notably, those wins saw them outscore their opponents by seven goals while scoring zero. And their recent 2-0 win over Huesca had a former Real Madrid man, defensive midfielder Marcos Llorente become the star of the night as it was his pair of assists that was the deciding factor to give Simeone's men all three points and thus Los Rojiblancos a three point cushion heading into this weekend's round of fixtures.
