Real vs Chelsea might not take place next week

UEFA president admits Real Madrid vs Chelsea UCL semi-final could be pushed back as punishment

April 22, 2021 By Ali M.
Los Blancos and the Blues were two of the founding members of the breakaway European Super League and could thus face repercussions.

The footballing world is reeling in the aftermath of the European Super League, with 12 of the continent's biggest teams – Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico, Man City, Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, Juventus, Inter Milan, and AC Milan – announcing on Sunday their plans to form a breakaway competition that would rival the UEFA Champions League.

Since then, all hell broke loose, with fans, pundits, and football experts all joining forces in condemning this tournament. It did not last long. By Tuesday, all six of the Premier League representatives withdrew from the tournament, with Atletico Madrid and the two Milan giants exiting early the following day.

Juventus chairman Andrea Agnelli admitted that this project is all but dead, but this does not mean the founding clubs, nicknamed the "Dirty Dozen", will escape without punishment. The English top-flight are said to be exploring disciplinary measures for the top six that took part while UEFA could dish out their own sanctions.

Aleksander Ceferin, the president of European football's governing body, admitted that the Champions League semifinal fixture between Chelsea and Real Madrid may not go ahead next week as punishment. While he added that the possibility of this occurring is small, it is enough to raise concerns. Speaking to Slovenian TV channel 24UR, the UEFA executive said (as per the Daily Mail):

"The key is that this season has already started, so broadcasters would come at us for damages if we don't play the semi-finals.

"So, there's a relatively small possibility that this match isn't played next week. But, things could be a little different in the future."

What about the other semifinal fixture between Man City, one of the 12 founding clubs, and PSG? The fact that Ligue 1 giants played no part in this controversial initiative might be one reason why that match-up is not firmly in their crosshairs. Furthermore, while Chelsea have withdrawn from the ESL, Los Blancos are yet to back out of the tournament and remain steadfast in their plan to establish this breakaway league.
