Leeds score late to dash Li'pool's top-four hopes

Watch: Leeds strike late to dash Liverpool's top-four hopes

April 19, 2021 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
Marcelo Bielsa's side denied the defending champions and all-important three points in Monday night's league clash.

Leeds United denied Liverpool a place in the top four of the Premier League by scoring a late equaliser in Monday night's clash. The hosts earned a deserving point after Diego Llorente headed home a corner in the 87th-minute, preventing the Reds from climbing into a Champions League place for next season.

Given the overwhelming sentiment brought forth by the plan for the European Super League plans, Leeds found themselves having a little edge over the defending champions who had been named as one of the six Premier League teams to join the elite league. Prior to kick-off, fans of the and as well as those of other clubs converged outside Elland Road to stage a protest where Liverpool shirts were burned. A plane displaying an anti-Super League message also flew over the stadium before kick-off.

Nevertheless, Marcelo Bielsa's men were unable to capitalize on the tension surround their opponents and stamp their dominance. In the first half, they were rather forced to deal with the visitor's persistent attack, eventually conceding Sadio Mane's opener in the 31st-minute after goalkeeper Illan Meslier's howler.

A fight back followed, but the attempts made by the Whites failed to yield the immediate response they sought. With less than four minutes of play left, all indications pointed at a defeat for Marcelo Bielsa's men. But against the run of play, they were handed a lifeline with Diego Llorente delivering the sucker punch after meeting Jack Harrison's cross in the 87th minute.

With the result, Liverpool remained in sixth position with 52 points after 32 games - two points behind fourth-placed West Ham and a point behind Chelsea who occupy fifth. Relatively, Leeds are now seven points away from a Europa League place and have already consolidated their involvement in next season's Premier League despite gaining promotion last season.
