Real Madrid dealt massive blow in La Liga title race after drab Getafe draw

Los Blancos failed to make use of the window of opportunity to add to their charge to make a case for the league title.

A tough result for Real Madrid at Getafe has put their pursuit for success in La Liga at jeopardy with the campaign gradually approaching its end. Los Blancos were subjected to a drab 0-0 draw and now risk being demoted to third place.

The current title holders approached Sunday night's encounter with a host of their key men missing through injury and suspension. Both Karim Benzema and Toni Kroos started off the bench while the likes of Isco, Marcelo, Rodrygo, Odriozola and Victor Chust were all handed starting berths. Having seen Atletico Madrid secure an emphatic 5-0 win over Eibar, a win for Los Blancos was more of a neccessity than a probable happening.

However, Zinedine Zidane's men failed to pass the test with flying colors as the hosts remained resolute throughout the proceeding. But for the heroics of Thibaut Courtois, the current league title holders could have been condemned to a painful defeat in the Madrid derby. The biggest moment for them was when Mariano had a goal ruled for offside after being marginally offside. The out-of-favor forward also came close to scoring afterward but had his header cleared off the lines.

With the night's result, Real Madrid will enter the new week three points behing Atletico Madrid and two above Barcelona who have a game in hand. The hope of a dramatic finish also exists with the Catalans and Diego Simeone's side yet to feature against each other in the second round.
