Greenwood and Cavani land EPL milestone

Man Utd: Greenwood and Cavani land Premier League milestones in crucial Burnley win

April 18, 2021 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The pair entered the record books with their respective goal contributions in Sunday's encounter.

Manchester United pair Mason Greenwood and Edinso Cavani made a little bit of history for their respective goal contribution in Sunday's Premier League meeting with Burnley. Both players hit the target as the Red Devils put in a commanding second-half performance to secure all the three points in the must-win encounter.

With six matches left of the season to play, Solskjaer's men still have a slender chance to potentially usurp Manchester City to the Premier League title. As a result, a win over Burnley was of the essence, especially after their rivals lost in their previous outing against Leeds United. The first 45 minutes against the Clarets failed to yield anything substantial for the Old Trafford outfit who came into the encounter off the back of semi-final qualification in the Europa League at the expense of Granada. However, a remarkable second half performance eventually took them over the line.

It was Mason Greenwood who drew first blood after combinning with Marcus Rashford just two minutes after play resumed in the second half. However, the lead did not last for long as the visitors will respond with an equalizer less than two minutes later through James Tarkowski. With all indications hinting at another classic draw between the pair, Man United were fired in front by young Mason Greenwood once more after his strike at goal took a wicked deflection off Jack Cork into the net. Substitute Edinson Cavani then sealed the deal by finishing off a blistering counter-attacking move after Vydra had failed to convert a big chance to restore parity at the other end a few seconds earlier.

With his brace, Mason Greenwood tied with Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney as the club's highest scoring teenager in the history of the Premier League with 15 goals. Relatively, Edinson Cavani closed in on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's and Javier Hernandez' record as the as the players with more goals as a substitute for the club in a single season. The Uruguayan has scored four times from the bench while his manager and pair managed five goals apiece in the 1998-1999 and 2010-2011 seasons respectively.
