The former Manchester United defender and his family endured a terrible scare when robbers broke into their home in the early hours of the morning.

On Thursday evening, Chris Smalling and his Roma teammates celebrated their side's progression to the final four of the Europa League after the Giallorossi saw off Ajax. The Lupi will now take on Manchester United as they hope to feature in their first European final in decades.

Veteran defender Smalling wasn't part of the starting XI in that match as Paulo Fonseca's men sealed their berth, nor was he on the bench as he's recovering from a knee injury. Unfortunately, his joy at seeing his team make it to the semis was short-lived, as his family was subjected to a horrifying experience in the early morning hours on Friday morning as a bunch of robbers broke into their home.

As per La Gazzetta dello Sport, a trio of armed and masked men invaded his house and made off with jewelry and a Rolex watch.

Although his wife and young son were home at the time, no one was hurt, and police are now investigating the incident.

Smalling joined Roma on a permanent deal last October after spending the prior season at the Stadio Olimpico on loan.

The Giallorossi, who currently sit in seventh spot, are just outside the Europa League group stage spots, which are occupied by Lazio and Napoli. However, if they win the Europa League, they'll secure an automatic Champions League berth.
