Zidane makes UCL history after draw vs Liverpool

Zinedine Zidane makes Champions League history after goalless draw vs Liverpool

April 14, 2021 By Oscar Rojas
The French boss innovated once more to lead Los Blancos to another semi-final in the most relevant club competition in the globe.

Just like last week in the first leg of this tie and in El Clásico, Zinedine Zidane found a way to lead his team to success when no one thought he could, and while at it, he silenced most of his fiercest critics with a stellar tactical approach.

The French manager made it past Liverpool despite the heavy number of absences, and he did so by improvising a defense that included Fede Valverde as right back. Even with those changes, Zidane kept Liverpool at bay and, with a little help from Thibaut Courtois, led Los Blancos to their fourth semi-final in five attempts under the French tactician.

While the former playmaker is getting closer to becoming the most successful coach in team history, he also managed to accomplish an international feat by leading Los Merengues to a new semi-final, and he did that by surpassing one of the coaches he looked up to when he was studying to become a manager.

Once the game ended, Zidane shared his views on what has to be considered as a major triumph for his squad.

"We found a way to suffer and still make it to the next round. We made quite an effort as a team and I am really happy for the guys. It was a big game and we are happy to have made it through. Now we need to rest because we have not won anything yet. We need to let this sink in and enjoy the moment," Zidane said.

Now, Real Madrid will have to prepare for one more trip to England, as the Spanish giants will face Chelsea in the semi-finals for the first time in this competition.
