Pochettino makes candid admission on Marquinhos

Pochettino reveals worrying team news ahead of highly-anticipated PSG vs Bayern UCL clash

April 12, 2021 By Ali M.
The French giants look to defend their 3-2 advantage but could be without one of their best players bar Mbappe and Neymar.

PSG are gearing up for their crucial second-leg showdown with Bayern Munich, one of the most anticipated fixtures between now and the end of the season. Tuesday will see this UEFA Champions League battle wrap up as the French giants look to get revenge on the Germans for last season's UCL final defeat.

Pochettino's men are in the driving seat to do just that. Kylian Mbappe showed once again why he is one of the hottest players in world football, scoring a brace en route to a 3-2 first leg triumph at the Allianz Arena. Les Parisiens simply need to defend their league at the Parc des Princes in order to secure their spot in the semis.

Unfortunately, that will be easier said than done as Pochettino could be without his best outfield player bar Mbappe and Neymar. That man is none other than Marquinhos, the reliable Brazilian center-back who has been at the heart of PSG's defense this season.

The South American defender got on the scoresheet and kept things tight at the back until being forced off with a muscle injury. In fact, the Ligue 1 giants did not concede until the Brazilian was replaced by Ander Herrera, leaving fans concerned for the return leg.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday's game, Pochettino offered a glimmer of hope regarding the club captain but admitted he is unlikely to start. "We don't know yet. We will make a decision tomorrow. In principle, he could be part of the group," the Argentine boss said in his press conference, as per Goal.

"Of course, he won't be able to start the match, but he could be on the bench."

Can the French giants hold onto their lead in the absence of Marquinhos? That's the question on everyone's mind as Mbappe and Co. look to make it to the UEFA Champions League final for the second year running.

Unfortunately, Marquinhos is not Pochettino's only concern. The gaffer admitted that he could be without Verratti and Florenzi for the return leg as the pair have just recovered from COVID-19.

"In principle we haven't decided on the team. It would be difficult for Marco Verratti to start and, for Alessandro Florenzi, we will also see how he is tomorrow," Pochettino added.
