Serie A Roundup after April 11 games

Serie A Roundup - Inter Milan and Weston McKennie make history

April 12, 2021 By Oscar Rojas
For the first time since 2017, there were no major changes in the standings among the top seven teams in this league.

The 2020-21 Serie A season barely had any surprises in store for fans last weekend, as Inter kept their record-breaking pace with another win, this time against Cagliari. Elsewhere, Milan returned to winning ways with a 3-1 victory over Parma, while Juventus followed suit with a similar victory over Genoa. With eight games to go, Inter still have the upper hand over Milan, and the title is theirs to lose if they can't take advantage of their current 11-point lead over the rossoneri.

With that in mind, let's have a look at the main talking points after all the games that took place during the last weekend.

Top five teams in the Italian Serie A until April 11

Inter remain eleven points away from Milan and 12 points clear off Juve in the title race, as all teams in the top 7 positions won their games during the weekend. The major shift during this week was Atalanta's goalscoring prowess, which saw them become the top scoring team in the league with 71 goals.

Serie A's Top 3 scorers

Cristiano Ronaldo kept his lead at the top of Serie A's goalscoring charts despite not having found the back of the net. Curiously, neither Romelu Lukaku nor Luis Muriel were able to add more goals to their tallies, so there were no changes in the podium of the Capocannoniere race.

Serie A - Top headlines

  • Weston McKennie makes history for Juventus - The American footballer came from the bench to score one more goal for the bianconeri, making him the footballer with the most goals as a sub in a single season for Juventus since the three-point era began.

  • Inter leapfrog record established by 1989-90 version of AC Milan - Antonio Conte's men are closing in on their first Scudetto since the Jose Mourinho era, and their quest has seen them establishing quite a few milestones. This weekend their win over Cagliari saw them become the first team to win their first eleven games of the second half of the season in Serie A history, surpassing the previous record owned by Arrigo Sacchi's Milan, which was established in 1990.

  • Zlatan sent off in strange incident against Parma - Zlatan's return after an injury has not been as successful as Milan intended, and to make matters worse, the Swedish ace was sent off during this weekend's clash against Parma for an undisclosed issue. The referee reported an insult by "Ibra", but the former Manchester United ace has already asked his bosses to appeal the decision, since he did nothing to offend either his opponent of the ref.

Top matches to watch in the Serie A from April 17-18, 2021

Milan vs Genoa - The rossoneri will not have it easy to beat Genoa, a team that has found a way to give all Serie A leaders a hard time despite their disappointing form in the competition. The rossoneri may be forced to play this game without Zlatan Ibrahimovic after his red card against Parma.

Atalanta vs Juventus - The battle for third place will see Cristiano Ronaldo and Co. making the trip to Bergamo, where Atalanta will try to show why they are the top scoring team in the league. Whichever team wins this game will have an edge over the other in the race to finish third in the league...or higher, if Milan drop points.

Napoli vs Inter - Conte's men will face one of the toughest games they have left in their calendar when they face Gattuso's Napoli. I Partenopei still dream about finishing the season in fourth, and if they want to do so, ending Inter's unbeaten run in 2021 would be a good way to keep that dream alive.
