Palmeiras will aim to become the most successful team in South America when they face a competitive Argentine side in this two-legged tie.

The 2021 Recopa Sudamericana kicks off on Wednesday with both teams involved searching for their first title in the competition.

Both Palmeiras and Argentine club Defensa y Justicia will be making their debut in the tournament. Whoever wins will add this title to the already ilustrious resume held by each of their countries. Brazilian clubs have won the tournament 11 times, while Argentine clubs have won the competition on nine different occasions.

This time, Palmeiras will make it to the title clash as Copa Libertadores winners. Abel Ferreira's side will get to this game on a two-match winning streak, where they have kept two clean sheets against Gremio. Those wins came in handy for the Verdao side, since they managed to end a four-match run without a win prior to their cup wins against Gremio.

On the other side of the pitch, Defensa y Justicia will make it to the clash with no wins in their last two games, where they lost to Boca Juniors (2-1) and drew against Vélez (1-1). The Buenos Aires-based team won their first international tournament a few weeks ago, when they defeated Lanús with a 3-0 score. Now, the green and yellow side will want to add another CONMEBOL-sanctioned trophy to their record in their first Recopa Sudamericana appearance.

The first leg of the competition will be held in Argentina, while the return leg is scheduled to be played in Brazil next week.
