Torino vs Juventus: Can Scudetto champs refind form in upcoming Derby della Mole?

April 2, 2021 By Michelle Bonsu
After a humiliating loss to minnows Benevento, the pressure will be on the reigning Scudetto champs to get things right as they take on city rivals Torino in the latest installment of the Derby della Mole.

Preview: Torino vs Juventus

Ahead of the upcoming Derby della Mole, Torino have been given a major boost. The Granata recently announced that all their key players who played for their respective national sides during the international break are COVID-19 free, and that includes Andrea Belotti, Rolando Mandragora and Salvatore Sirigu.

Davide Nicola's side will need all the boosts they can get. The hosts have lost three of their last five games and are just one point off from the drop zone. Their have a bad track record against Juventus, with just one win in their last 29 meetings with their city rivals, while losing 22. That being said, they still do have a vital game in hand, which will be crucial in order to keep their survival hopes intact. Nicola's men come into this game having suffered a narrow 1-0 loss to Sampdoria just prior to the international break, but earned a deserved 3-2 win over Sassuolo in their match before that to end a 13-game winless streak at the Stadio Olimpico.

Meanwhile, things have gone from bad to worse for Juventus. Recently, Andrea Pirlo, who is already under pressure to save his career, announced that three key players will be suspended for Saturday's Derby della Mole. Weston McKennie, Paulo Dybala, and Arthur will play no part in the match after McKennie hosted a party that was found to have run afoul of Italy's COVID-19 rules.

The loss to Benevento means that Juventus currently sit ten points behind Inter as the Bianconeri look to win what would be their tenth straight Scudetto. Although there are still some Juve fans who have hopes that the Scudetto will still remain in Turin at the end of this season, that hope is rapidly fading with each passing round as Inter also have a game in hand as well. Ten points is a huge margin to overcome, and this game is naturally a must-win for Pirlo's side as Inter are the natural favorites in their away clash with Bologna played later on in the day.

If Juventus can win here - and keep a clean sheet - that will mark not only six wins on the spin, but also a sixth consecutive shut-out for the first time in the derby's history. Will Pirlo be able to at least stave off some of the pressure that continues to mount on his shoulders?

Team news: Torino vs Juventus

Torino: Wilfried Singo is a definite absentee, while defenders Bremer, Lyanco and Nicolas Nkoulou are all doubts for the hosts.

Juventus: Gianluigi Buffon has been handed a one-match ban for uttering blasphemous phrases, while both Merih Demiral and Leonardo Bonucci have tested positive for COVID-19. Meanwhile, Weston McKennie, Paulo Dybala, and Arthur have all been suspended for disciplinary reasons - although Arthur wasn't going to play anyway due to injury. And finally, Giorgio Chiellini had to leave the Azzurri camp early due to a knock and may miss this game.
