Arteta responds to Aguero rumors

Arteta gives cheeky response to rumors linking Aguero with Arsenal switch

April 1, 2021 By Ali M.
The Argentine will be leaving the Etihad Stadium this summer and has been linked with a move to north London.

Sergio Aguero will be leaving Man City at the end of the season, bringing an end to his historic, trophy-laden time at the Etihad Stadium once his contract expires this summer. Now that the tributes are out of the way, the focus has shifted to his next destination, with many wondering what will be in store for the Argentine come 2021/21.

The 32-year-old has been linked with an array of clubs but one of the more interesting ones is Arsenal. The Gunners are said to be eyeing the four-time Premier League winner, and for obvious reasons, given that current manager Mikel Arteta worked closely with Kun during his time as the Citizens' assistant coach.

Furthermore, with Alexandre Lacazette's future in north London being under heavy doubt as he is entering the final year of his contract, the Gunners are said to be interested in a new no.9. Given the financial crisis Arsenal are currently in due to COVID-19, landing an experienced, goalscoring machine for free might prove too tempting to turn down.

But is there any truth to these rumors? Arteta was asked in a recent press conference whether the north London giants are eyeing a move for the South American icon, resulting in a coy but interesting response from the Emirates Stadium boss.

"We will see what happens with him in the future," Mikel said with a smile, as per Goal.

That wasn't all Mikel had to say about Kun as the Spaniard lavished praise on the Man City striker ahead of his summer departure. Having been present for two of the Argentine's four Premier League wins, Arteta was blessed to witness the brilliance of Aguero first-hand.

"Anyone who has been close to Sergio would say the same thing. He's been one of the main faces that has lifted that project," the Arsenal tactician said.

"You need some leadership, you need some quality players to create those moments, to start to build that project. It's not only the way he plays, it is his charisma, his personality - he is loved by everybody at that club."

The former Atletico Madrid talent has scored a whopping 257 goals since arriving at the Etihad Stadium, becoming the club's all-time top scorer and the Premier League's highest-scoring foreigner. The Argentine appears all but destined to add a fifth EPL title to his trophy cabinet as Guardiola's men boast a 14-point lead at the top of the table.
