Most-watched soccer games on U.S. TV: March 23-29

March 31, 2021 By Juan Aguerrevere
The international friendly between the U.S. men’s national team and Northern Ireland broadcasted by FOX topped the soccer viewership charts in the U.S. from Tuesday, March 23, through Monday, March 29.

The USMNT defeated Northern Ireland 2-1 in Belfast on Sunday, making it the first time the USA wins a game against a European side on European soil since 2016. FOX's broadcast of the game was the most-watched in the U.S. last week with a total of 835,000 viewers. Also, the broadcast received a 0.49 viewership rating.

The second and third most-watched soccer games on U.S. television were screened by Spanish-language channel TUDN, and both were Concacaf Olympic Qualifying matches. Mexico's 1-0 win over the U-23 USA team on Wednesday, March 24, was the second most-viewed game of the week, receiving a 0.27 viewership rating after 612,000 people tuned in to watch it. Also, the game earned the No. 8 position in Showbuzzdaily's top 150 cable originals and network finals on Wednesday. On the other hand, Mexico sealed a spot in the Tokyo Olympics with a 2-0 win over Canada in the semifinals of the Concacaf Olympic Qualifiers. A total of 573,000 people watched the game, and the broadcast received a 0.26 viewership rating.

Other TUDN soccer broadcasts scored good ratings, including Mexico's 1-0 loss to Wales on Saturday. It received a 0.09 rating after 317,000 viewers tuned in to watch el Tri. The remaining broadcast screened UEFA World Cup Qualifying games and Concacaf Olympic Qualifying games.

Fox Sports 1 had a good showing last week with three broadcasts landing spots in Showbuzzdaily's top 150 cable originals and network finals. Honduras' 2-1 win over the USA in the Concacaf Olympic Qualifiers semifinal, which meant the USA will not participate in the Olympic Soccer Tournament for the third time in a row, was the most-watched out of the three with 330,000 viewers. Also, FS1 showed Mexico's 1-0 win over the USA on Wednesday and received a 0.15 rating after 287,000 people watched the game.

Four ESPN2 screenings landed spots in Showbuzzdaily's top 150 cable originals and network finals last week. The most-watched game out of the four was the USMNT's 4-1 win over Jamaica in Austria on Thursday. The broadcast was given a 0.14 rating for the 267,000 people who tuned in.

Lastly, an FA Women's Super League between Chelsea and Aston Villa aired on NBC Sports Network made it to Sunday's Showbuzzdaily's top 150 cable originals and network finals. Sixty-three-thousand people watched the game.
