The Portuguese striker moved another step closer to breaking another world record.

Portugese skipper Cristiano Ronaldo was on target as his side secured a 3-1 win over Luxembourg in Tuesday night's World Cup qualifier. The 35-year-old attacker got his side's second goal to close in on Ali Daei's international goalscoring record as the Seleccao usurped Serbia to assume top-spot in Group A.

It was Luxembourg who drew first blood through Gerson Rodriguez's header before Portugal managed to survive an early scare. Just like in the previous 2-2 draw with Serbia, Diogo Jota got the opener for the European champions with the first half of the encounter virtually over. Five minutes after play resumed for the second half, Ronaldo hit the target to complete the comeback before Sporting CP Joao Palhinha scored the third and final goal.

For Cristiano Ronaldo, the goal meant that he has now scored 103 goals in 168 international caps for the Portuguese national team. He is so far just seven goals away from breaking Iranian legend Ali Daei record of 109 goals in 149 caps during his career. With this round of international matches concluding in the coming days, the earliest the Juventus star could get to significantly closing in on the long-standing record will be on June 4, 2021 when his side meet Spain and Israel in a friendlies ahead of the European championship.

Meanwhile, the night's result fired Portugal into first place after three outings. With seven points, the Seleccao are only separated from second-place Serbia by just a goal.
