March 30, 2021 By Ali M.
The Dragons go in search of their first win in the 2022 World Cup qualifying tournament but will face a tricky opponent on Tuesday. Here's a preview of Wales vs Czech Republic.

Wales vs Czech Republic – preview

Wales take to the field once again in the ongoing international break, hosting Czech Republic in yet another World Cup qualifier. This 2:45 p.m. ET will take place at the Cardiff City Stadium as the home side go in search of their first victory.

The Dragons have already kicked off their campaign to qualify for the Qatar 2022. Unfortunately, their opening game did not go as planned as Bale and Co. suffered a 3-1 loss on Matchday 1. That defeat came against Belgium, FIFA's number one ranked nation, and has left Robert Page's side in a tricky situation.

Goals from Thorgan Hazard, Kevin de Bruyne, and Romelu Lukaku cancelled out Harry Wilson's 10th-minute opener and reversed Wales' early lead. They had been on a six-game winning streak up until then but now find themselves four points behind both Belgium and Czech Republic in the race to make Qatar 2022.

The hosts have since returned to winning ways, beating Mexico 1-0 in a friendly, but that result will amount to nothing if the Dragons fall once again in the World Cup qualifying round. Should Bale and Co. suffer a defeat, they could find themselves seven points behind in the race to make Qatar 2022, which would be a near-impossible gap to overturn.

Both Belgium and Tuesday's opponents are on four points, having won once and drawn once in their opening two games. Jaroslav Silhavy's men will be high on confidence after pulling off a 1-1 draw against Roberto Martinez's side and will be looking to maintain their unbeaten start.

These two sides last met in 2007 and since then, Wales have improved as a footballing nation by a mile. Will they be able to beat the Czech Republic or does a second consecutive defeat await the Dragons? Tune in to find out.

Team news

Wales: The hosts look to be without Joe Allen after the Stoke midfielder picked up an injury in the 3-1 loss to Belgium. Other than that, caretaker manager Robert Page has a fully-fit squad at his disposal.

Czech Republic: Tomas Kalas, Ondrej Kolar, and Alex Kral remain injured for the visitors. Elsewhere, Jiri Pavlenka could return to the lineup in place for Tomas Vaclik.

Key stats

  • Wales have not beaten the Czech Republic in three previous encounters.

  • However, the Dragons are unbeaten at home since 2018.

  • Czech midfielder Tomas Soucek has three goals to his name in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers and is the tournament's top scorer so far.
