One of the most intense rivalries in CONCACAF will add one more chapter to its rivalry when they lock horns far away from their homes.

Mexico and Costa Rica will bring their CONCACAF rivalry to new heights on Tuesday, when they will play their first international friendly away from their continent. Both teams will show up to this clash after unfortunate results in their first game of this break, which means that both of them will be eager to win their first match in 2021.

Mexico saw a ten-game streak without a loss coming to an end last Saturday, when they dropped the ball against Wales with a 1-0 defeat. That game was marked by Mexico's inability to pose a threat in front of the Welsh goal, mainly because their "False 9" system with Hirving Lozano playing the center-forward role failed miserably. Now, Gerardo Martino will have to look for alternatives on his bench, with strikers Alan Pulido and Henry Martin being the main options.

As for Costa Rica, the team led by Ronald González has failed to win a game in the last twelve months. Out of their six games played, Costa Rica have drawn two and lost four. The team even failed to beat the Basque country team in an exhibition team last November. Their last match ended in a goalless draw against Bosnia, which deepened their current woes and raised more eyebrows regarding the team's immediate future.

This will be the first of at least three games between these teams in 2021. Their next encounter will take place in the CONCACAF Nations League finals next June, and they will be playing one more match in the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers next September. These teams could have at least one more game added to that schedule if they are paired up against each other in the CONCACAF Gold Cup group or if they clash in the knockout stage.

Mexico vs Costa Rica - Head-to-head

  • This will be the 51st game between Mexico and Costa Rica.

  • Mexico have won 28 games against Costa Rica.

  • Los Ticos have only won six of their previous games against El Tri.

  • The last game between these teams ended in a draw after 90 minutes, but Mexico would go on to beat Los Ticos in a penalty shootout.

  • Costa Rica have not beaten Mexico since October 15, 2013. That game ended 2-1 in Los Ticos' favor.
