The Portuguese skipper was left fuming after a controversial referee decision denied him a late winner in Saturday's World Cup qualifier.

Portuguese captain Cristiano Ronaldo walked off the pitch before the final whistle came and threw his captain's armband in frustration after a controversial referee call denied his side a win in Saturday's clash with Serbia. The 35-year-old superstar was left fuming when what many thought was a late-winner for his side, was erroneously deemed to have not crossed the line.

The night's World Cup qualifying encounter was not short of drama with Portugal blowing a two-goal lead to eventually settle for a draw. The Seleccao were put in front by Diogo Jota in the 11th minute and had their lead doubled by the Liverpool star moments before half time but conceded an Aleksandar Mitrovic goal right after play resumed for the second half. Filip Kostic subsequently restored parity in the 60th minute, setting the tone for both sides to seek a winning goal in the final 30 minutes.

However, none of the two countries could manage that before Serbia were left handicapped with sending off of Nikola Milenkovic in the 92nd minute. Shortly after, Cristiano Ronaldo had the opportunity to steal all the three points for Portugal but saw his effort scrapped in a controversial manner. The Juventus star's shot had cross the line and a replay confirmed that it indeed did. But to the amazement of the attacker and his teammates, a goal was not awarded as there was no goal line technology or Video Assistant Referee put in place.

The visibly upset striker then confronted the linesman about the incident but ended up being shown a yellow card for argument. He subsequently left the pitch with a few seconds left of the game to play and threw his captain armband down to show his displeasure. Watch the incident below:
