The Blues boast a 1-0 lead and will look to book their spot in the quarter-finals. Here’s a preview of their Stamford Bridge clash with Atletico Madrid.

Chelsea vs Atletico – preview

All eyes will be on Stamford Bridge this Wednesday as Chelsea prepare to lock horns with Atletico Madrid in their highly-anticipated UEFA Champions League showdown. This 3 p.m. ET affair is the second leg of their round of 16 match-up, with the Premier League giants boasting the advantage in the race to make the quarter-finals.

The first leg of this tie ended in a crucial victory for Tuchel's men as they came away with a 1-0 triumph in Bucharest – this match was moved to a neutral venue due to COVID-19 restrictions. Olivier Giroud was the savior, scoring an acrobatic winner, which was only awarded after a long review from VAR, and earning the EPL outfit a crucial away goal.

Since that victory, Tuchel's side have only gotten stronger, playing four times – against Man United, Liverpool, Everton, and Leeds – and picking up two wins while conceding zero goals. As a result, the London giants have returned to the top four and remain unbeaten under the helm of their highly-rated German tactician.

Since arriving at Stamford Bridge, the 47-year-old has overseen 12 games, with Chelsea winning all but four of those fixtures. Their new-found defensive stability has been key, with Abramovic's side conceding only two goals since appointing Tuchel. Werner and Havertz are yet to discover their form, which is one of the reasons Thomas was brought in, and as a result, the hosts have either scored once or failed to find the back of the net in eight of those 12 fixtures.

As for Atletico, things have taken a sour turn for the Spanish giants. While they remain at the top of the table in La Liga, they have drawn twice in their last four games since losing to Chelsea. As a result, Los Rojiblancos' lead has been slashed to four points, with Barcelona making a late surge for the title. Crashing out of the UEFA Champions League could be an unwanted blow to the club's confidence.

Team news

Chelsea: The home side will be without two key players in the form of Jorginho and Mason Mount, the latter of which has been a mainstay in Lampard's and Tuchel's lineup, as both are suspended. Matteo Kovacic has been cleared to play, which is a huge boost, while Thiago Silva could be in line for a return after making the bench in the weekend EPL fixture.

Atletico: Simeone has a fully-fit squad at his disposal, which is great, as they have a 1-0 deficit to overturn. It will be interesting to see how Luis Suarez fares, with the Uruguayan scoring only twice in his last eight outings.

Key stats

  • Atletico have lost three UEFA Champions League matches against Chelsea, tied with Bayern Munich and Real Madrid for joint-most defeats against a single opponent.

  • The Blues have won only once in three home clashes with Los Rojiblancos and that was back in 2009 (D1, L1).

  • The London giants have never crashed out of a two-legged European tournament after winning the first leg away from Stamford Bridge.
