The Blaugrana have the golden chance of slashing the gap between them and league leaders Atletico. Here's a preview of Monday's Camp Nou clash.

Barcelona vs Huesca – preview

Barcelona are gearing up for a crucial Spanish Primera Division clash with Huesca in their 3 p.m. ET Camp Nou fixture. The Blaugrana look to build on their late surge for the Liga title, hosting Juan José Rojo Martín's relegation-battling side on Monday.

The visitors are dead bottom in the table. With only three wins and 20 points after 26 fixtures, Huesca find themselves four points adrift of the safety zone, with little to suggest the newly-promoted side will survive the drop. The last time they faced the Catalan giants at the Camp Nou, they lost by a whopping 8-2 score line. However, this raises the question: why is this a crucial fixture for Barcelona?

The reason is simple: with Atletico dropping points on Saturday courtesy of goalless draw at Getafe, the Blaugrana are in pole position to move within four points of Simeone's table-topping side. This would be significant for Messi and Co. as they appeared all but out of the Spanish top-flight race a few months back only to claw their way back into the mix.

Having crashed out of the UEFA Champions League during the midweek, going out 5-2 on aggregate against PSG, Barcelona cannot afford to slip-up in La Liga. The Primera Division is one of only two competitions Koeman's side are competing for – the other is the Copa del Rey final in April – and must focus on picking up as many points as possible between now and Matchday 38.

Given Atletico's form and Barcelona's trajectory, winning the league isn't out of the question. The Blaugrana are looking to make it four wins on the trot, have triumphed in 10 of their last 11 fixtures, and are unbeaten in La Liga since the start of December. And it's not merely results as the team's overall performance has raised a level or two.

Koeman's men have shored up the defense, keeping three clean sheets in their last five outings, while scoring an impressive 13 times along the way. In the 1-1 draw with PSG, despite crashing out of the tournament as a result of that score line, fans were left impressed and optimistic by the performance of the team as only a lack of clinicalness cost them. Victory against Huesca would only add to the growing optimism in Catalonia.

Team news

Barcelona: Koeman's injury crisis has not eased up, with Gerard Pique, Ronald Araujo, Philippe Coutinho, Ansu Fati and Sergi Roberto all remaining on the sideline. The Dutch tactician will probably stick with the back three and could hand Samuel Umtiti a rare start. Messi, who scored but missed a penalty in the PSG draw, will lead the line and will likely be partnered by Dembele despite squandering a few chances in the Parc des Princes stalemate.

Huesca: Gaston Silva, Pedro Mosquera, Sandro Ramirez and Antonio Valera all remain out. Meanwhile, Japanese striker Shinji Okazaki will be vying for a start.

Key stats

  • Barcelona have failed to beat Huesca only once in their entire encounters, winning four and drawing once in five clashes.

  • The Blaugrana haven't lost a single game in their last 16 league outings.

  • The visitors boast only one away victory in their last 20 attempts.

  • Messi is all but destined to equal Xavi's record of most Barcelona appearances (767) should he feature in this fixture.
