Werder Bremen's 1-1 draw with Bayern marked their only point from their last 20 meetings - a rather dismal record.

Preview: Werder Bremen vs Bayern

Currently in 12th spot, Werder Bremen will be hoping to try to halt Bayern when they come to town on Saturday. They've done it before - die Grün-Weißen managed to hold the reigning champs to a one-all draw in the reverse meeting earlier this season. And Florian Kohfeldt's men are presently on a three match unbeaten streak, buoyed by Josh Sargent's hot streak. The American striker has netted in this last three games, including as Bremen ended Eintracht Frankfurt's 11-match unbeaten streak. With seven goals, he's also the team's top goal-scorer this season and will be hoping to score in a fourth match for the first time in his young career.

However, Bremen won't be under any illusions of completing what would be a shock double. Their 1-1 draw with Bayern on November 20th is the only point they've picked up from their last 20 meetings with the Bavarian titans. And last season, while Bayern were charging towards yet another league title (en route to eventually winning the Sextuple), Bremen were frantically battling to avoid the drop. They did so, by finishing in 16th spot and surviving a two-legged play-off, and presently their 30 points have them well clear of the drop zone - meaning that if things don't go as planned, they still do have a buffer between themselves and the bottom three.

In fact, Bremen haven't beaten Bayern since September 2009. Since then, they've only avoided defeat on three occasions, one being last November. Meanwhile, Bayern come into this tie having defeated Dortmund in last weekend's Klassiker tie. And once again, Robert Lewandowski came back to haunt his former club as he netted a hat-trick to ensure that Hansi Flick's side continue to remain ahead of RB Leipzig.

With 31 goals, Lewandowski is not only on course to win his sixth Torjägerkanone but also is looking increasingly likely to finally break Gerd Müller's long-standing record. Last season saw the Polish star net 34, but it wasn't enough to overtake Müller's haul of 40 during the 1971/1972 season. This time around, he has just nine goals to go to match it, and with over ten matches to go, one would be quite unwise to bet against him achieving what will be a historic feat.

Leipzig, of course, will be not only hoping that Lewandowski doesn't score but also that Bayern slip-up as they search for that opening to pull ahead. Will Bremen end their miserable run against Bayern? Or will Lewandowski, in red hot form, bring them crashing back down to earth?
