The retired Schalke legend, who is ranked second on the all-time Bundesliga goal-scorers list, backs Bayern star Robert Lewandowski to break two records.

For the past three seasons, there's only been one player fortunate to claim the coveted Torjägerkanone prize: Robert Lewandowski. The Polish star, to date, has won the title of the Bundesliga's top goalscorer on five occasions, and with 31 goals this season, is on course to make it a fourth consecutive title and sixth overall in his career.

Lewandowski is only second to none other than Gerd Müller in terms of Torjägerkanone awards. Interestingly, it's the same Müller, who won seven topscorer prizes during his 15-year long spell at Bayern Munich, that the 32-year-old is hoping to outscore during this campaign. During the 1971/1972 campaign, Müller scored a whopping 40 goals - an achievement that has stood for nearly four decades - and Lewandowski has been intent on breaking this record since he won his first Torjägerkanone with Dortmund in the 2013/2014 season.

Last year saw him score 34 league goals - his most so far of his career - but still fell short. This time around, with 31 strikes in just 23 league matches, he's not only well on his way to match Müller's seasonal record, but completely surpass it.

That's not all. Retired Schalke icon Klaus Fischer, who scored 268 goals over his 20-year-long career, has backed Lewandowski not just to obliterate Müller's record of 40 strikes in a season, but eventually become the Bundesliga's all-time top goalscorer.

Lewandowski presently has 267 goals, which means he'll at least finish the 2020/2021 season only behind Müller's 365.

And Fischer believes that we will see Lewandowski achieve this before he hangs up his boots.

"If he [scores] 40 this year, then 365 is also possible because he'll only need around 22 [goals] per season", he noted during an interview with German publication kicker.

"[So] I can see it happening when you look at his fitness and how few injuries he's had, [and given that] Bayern will remain a leading team in Europe over the next few years, he'll be continuing to [play for and] score goals for a top team."
