The veteran trio were initially told in 2019 that they'd no longer be part of die Mannschaft going forward - but could now be given a way back into the fold.

In 2018, reigning World Cup champions Germany suffered arguably their most humiliating tournament in recent times as die Mannschaft were dumped out of that year's edition during the group stages.

Shortly after, head coach Joachim Low announced that he'd be making some drastic changes to the team's line-up. In March 2019, in a bid to freshen things up, Low decided to ship out several experienced veterans. Stars like Bayern duo Thomas Muller and Jerome Boateng, plus experienced Dortmund defender Mats Hummels found their names on the chopping block as Low chose to sacrifice them for younger and unknown options.

Unfortunately, his plan hasn't worked out as he'd hoped. Germany were quite poor in their recent UEFA Nations League campaign, including a humiliating 6-0 defeat to Spain last November. And in the inaugural edition, die Mannschaft didn't fare that much better as they failed to win a single match, scoring just three times and conceding seven in the process. In fact, if they hadn't modified the Nations League for the second edition, Germany would have been relegated to the second tier - a shocking prospect considering they are widely viewed as one of football's heavyweights.

So, it's not surprising that Low, who is set to depart after the upcoming EURO 2020 tournament this summer, has decided to go back to the drawing board. In doing so, he's potentially set to renege on his decision to ship out the trio of Muller, Boateng, and Hummels and give them a way back into the squad ahead of the EURO 2020 competition.

Both Muller and Boateng are part of Bayern's history-making team as Roten notably recently became the second side in European football history to win the Sextuple (after Barcelona), while Hummels is back at Dortmund after spending two spells at the Allianz Arena.

Germany will be taking on Iceland as well as minnows Romania and Northern Macedonia for their 2022 World Cup qualifiers later this month, and this could present a great opportunity for Muller, Boateng, and Hummels to make their case for being part of the 23-man squad for this summer's EURO 2020 event.
