La Liga Roundup after March 7

La Liga Round-up: Barcelona, the big winners after Sunday's Madrid Derby draw

March 8, 2021 By Oscar Rojas
Los Culés narrowed th gap between themselves and Atlético while also getting a two-point lead over Real Madrid in their battle for second place.

The 2020-21 La Liga race is seemingly getting hotter with each passing week. Right now, there is a five-point gap between the top-seeded team, Atlético Madrid, and the third-place, Real Madrid. In between them is Barcelona, who have stepped up their efforts to keep themselves in the title race, and who incidentally were the big winners after this weekend, when Los Colchonero and Real Madrid drew their game on Sunday. With Barcelona's win, things got a bit tighter at the top, and now all bets are off when it comes to predicting which side will take the title home once the season ends.

Let's have a look at the main talking points after this weekend's games.

Top five teams in La Liga until March 8

Atlético saw their lead at the top narrow after drawing against Real Madrid. Barcelona's victory saw them claim the second spot all to themselves and three points behind the leaders, but Atlético's game in hand set to take place this week could change the landscape of the league. Meanwhile, the battle for fourth place got more interesting after Sevilla's loss to Elche. That loss combined with a win for Real Sociedad, who are now three points behind Los Hispalenses.

La Liga's Top 3 scorers

Lionel Messi failed to score this weekend, giving Luis Suárez and Gerard Moreno a chance to get closer to him. Atlético's Uruguayan striker will have a golden opportunity to catch up with his former team-mate this week, when Los Colchoneros host Athletic Club at Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

La Liga - Top headlines

  • Barcelona elect Laporta as new president - It may be something that has nothing to do with on-the-pitch matters, but Laporta's election as president might see the end of a dark era at Camp Nou. Los Culés' new main man will bring stability to the Catalan side, and with a solid structure behind him, it is safe to say that the Blaugrana side can now focus on signing a contract extension for Lionel Messi and carry on with their lives together.

  • Atlético's woeful form vs Real Madrid at home extended - It seemed that Los Colchoneros were heading for their first win against Real Madrid in La Liga since 2015, but a late goal by Karim Benzema ended their hopes for success. Atlético now face a complicated end to the season, which could see them lose the top spot in La Liga if they are unable to win any of their games this week and Barcelona do.

  • Karim Benzema re-writes Real Madrid's record books - The French striker claimed a record for himself in Real Madrid's history, as he became the non-Spanish player with the most La Liga appearances (371) for the team in the Spanish top-flight. Benzema surpassed Roberto Carlos to accomplish that feat.

Top matches to watch in La Liga from March 12-15, 2021

Real Madrid vs Elche - Los Blancos can't afford to drop more points if they want to stay in the title race. Beating Elche next weekend will be crucial for their efforts, especially since they will seemingly have more players to choose from as some of their footballers have recovered from their respective injuries.

Getafe vs Atlético - Los Colchoneros will have to fight for every point they can in order to keep their lead. This game, against a Madrid-based side, could be instrumental to their chances of winning the title, mainly because a loss here could see them toppled from the top spot by Barcelona.

Real Sociedad vs Barcelona - Los Culés have shown impressive form recently, and that sort of ego boost will be crucial for them if they want to beat Real Sociedad, a team that has historically made things difficult for Los Culés when they have made the trip to Anoeta.
