Makaay believes that Bayern Munich lack a defensive powerhouse at the back and they should have never sold Lucio
Fomer Bayern Munich striker Roy Makaay claims that the weakness in the Bavarian outfit comes from the back, where there has been a piece of jigsaw missing since Lucio was sold to Inter Milan.

"Back in the centre of defence, I [would] never have sold Lucio. He was one of the best central defenders with whom I played. At that time a decision was made to sell - it doesn't matter by whom - and now they have just noticed that he is missing."

Bayern had an average season last term, finishing third in the Bundesliga and getting knocked out of Europe in the second round by Inter Milan. Now, they have started a rebuilding process by capturing Manuel Neuer and Rafinha- moves that will significantly improve their defence. However, Makaay also believes that other factors have been affecting them as well.

"Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery have had long injury spells, thus [we] have two class players missing. Of course, [Bastian] Schweinsteiger, [Philipp] Lahm, [Thomas] Muller and [Mario] Gomez played a great season, but if Ribery is missing, the quality of the team decreases tremendously."

Makaay then went on to praise the quality of Barcelona and Real Madrid, claiming that they are the two best current teams in Europe.

"Barcelona's [performance] was [something] that we have not seen in a Champions League final. Barca is still very far away. Also, Real Madrid, apart from the games against Barcelona, showed excellent form."
