Liverpool extend poor Anfield record

Liverpool extend poor Anfield record as Fulham secure vital win

March 7, 2021 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Reds picked up another surprise home defeat to hit an unprecedented low.

Liverpool have hit a new all-time low following Sunday afternoon's defeat to Fulham at Anfield. An impressive display by the visitors caused the Reds to pick up what was their sixth straight Premier League home defeat, an unwanted feat which the club had never managed in the history of the competiton.

Ahead of the encounter, Jurgen Klopp resorted to making seven changes to the lineup that lost against Chelsea in midweek. The likes of Thiago Alcantara, Sadio Mane, Trent-Alexander Arnold and Fabinho were all dropped to the bench to accomodate other squad members with the Champions League last 16 clash with RB Leipzig also just around the corner.

Right from the start, it was Fulham that showed enough intent to get something out of the encounter although they were barely efficient in front of goal. After squandering a barage of chances earlier, the Cottagers finally got one over the line on the stroke of half-time through Mario Lemina. The Gabonese midfielder made the best of a poor defending attempt by Mohamed Salah to put the ball past Alisson.

While Jurgen Klopp sought a response from his men, nothing could be yieled with Fulham remaining resort right till the end. The result subsequently condemned the Merseysiders to their sixth consecutive of the season, a feat they last achieved in the 1953-54 season. In addition, Liverpool are now without a win in their last eight home games in the Premier League, drawing six and losing two. The last time they managed a worst run (10) was between October 1951 and March 1952.

For Fulham, it was only their second victory away at Liverpool. The win saw them move level on points with 17th-place Brighton in the battle to survive relegation.
