An old rivalry will be reignited when Manchester City takes on Manchester United at Etihad on Sunday.

Preview

Manchester City will welcome cross-town rivals Manchester United to Etihad Stadium on Sunday as they look to add another three points to their impressive haul. It’s a make or break match-up for either side as a win for the Citizens will basically confirm the status as champions-elect with 10 matches remaining. On the other hand, a win for Manchester United will reduce the point deficit instated by their rivals to just to 11, while putting them back in second place ahead of Leicester.

City will go into the derby as favorites considering the incredible unbeaten run they have put together in recent months. So far, Pep Guardiola’s men are undefeated across their last 28 matches in all competitions, winning the last 21 in succession. Tuesday’s victory over Wolves extended their winning streak in the Premier League to 15. Boasting the best home form in the league with 11 wins, two draws and one defeat in 14 outings, getting to put the Citizens to the sword will not come easily. They also have the lowest concession rate at their grounds as they have shipped only nine goals across those games.

Relatively, Manchester United will be banking on their brilliant away form to get them something out of the Etihad in Sunday’s super clash. The Red Devils made a little bit of history by becoming only the fourth English side to register a 14-game unbeaten run with their 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. The result against Roy Hodgson typifies the nature of most of their recent run. Having emerged as strong title contenders before the turn of the year, Solskjaer’s side has fallen short and has seen its chances slip, with rivals Manchester City looking like breakaway winners.

Mathematically, the race is far from over but the odds are well in favor of the blue half of Manchester. While the Citizens accrued 15 out of 15 wins for a little over two and a half months, the Old Trafford outfit could only manage seven wins, seven draws and one loss. Each one of their last three league outings has ended in a draw and with the team refusing to give up on the title chase, a special performance will be required to change the narrative.
