The last thing Cuba would have wanted after suffering a 5-0 defeat in their opening match, is to face favorites Mexico.
Cuba is indeed more of a baseball nation compared to the level of football over there. However, they arrived at the Gold Cup with hopes of making an impression of what they have got to offer when it comes to football. However, they have built themselves a massive mountain to climb now after losing 5-0 in their opening match against Costa Rica.

But things are certainly about to get worse for the Cubans. Next on their troublesome list is indeed no one else than Mexico. Javier Hernandez and co opened their campaign in style after a second half hat-rick by the Manchester United man earned them a deserving 5-0 win over El Salvador. And for Thursday, even Cuba know the level of difficulty they face.

"We have a national team going through a process," Cuba coach Raul Gonzalez said. "I believe we can show more. We do have a tough up-and-coming match against Mexico, who is considered the favorite.

"We have to manage the tactical and manage mistakes. Mexico is a great team and we'll see how Cuba arrives for that one at the time."

The Mexican team are made up of talented individuals that play all around Europe while the Cubans are mostly amateur players. Nevertheless, Gonzalez believes that playing more of this sort of matches will be the key in developing football over there.

"We need to play more games," Gonzalez said. "That's the only way we will get better. This tournament helps us but we need to do more and take advantage of out opportunities."
