Serie A roundup after February 28

Serie A Round-up: Inter keeps lead as Juve's title chances fade away

March 1, 2021 By Oscar Rojas
The bianconeri side dropped two key points that have risked their third-place for the upcoming midweek games.

The 2020-21 Serie A race seems to be a two-horse battle for the crown. Both Milan-based teams seem to have gotten away from the pack, and the one that makes less mistakes will surely take the title home. This will only mean bad news for Juventus, who will have to fight to win the Coppa Italia or the UEFA Champions League in order to save Andrea Pirlo from a shameful first season as coach.

Let's have a look at the main talking points after this weekend's games.

Top five teams in the Italian Serie A until February 28

Inter have a four-point lead over Milan, and on top of that, Conte's team has a ten-point advantage over Juventus and Atalanta, who are third and fourth, respectively. Roma is fifth with 44 points, but their loss to Milan has left them with a one-point lead over Lazio and Napoli.

Serie A's Top 3 scorers

Cristiano Ronaldo kept his one-goal lead at the top of the goalscoring charts with his right-footed shot against Verona, but Lukaku kept breathing on the back of his neck with his early strike against Genoa. Let's see if any of these strikers can extend their lead over Zlatan Ibrahimovic during the Swedish ace's absence.

Serie A - Top headlines

  • Lukaku makes history for Inter Milan - The Belgian striker keeps leading Inter's assault to the Serie A throne, and the nerazzurri's goalscorer managed to make his way into the team's record books by scoring the second fastest goal in a Serie A game for the team in the 21st Century. His goal after just 32 seconds cemented the team's path to another win and to keep their lead over Milan in the title race.

  • Cristiano thrives as Juve struggles to keep battle for title alive - The Portuguese ace scored one more time against Verona, but his goal was not enough to keep the team in clear contention to win the Scudetto. As of now, Juve sit ten points behind Inter in the title race, and it will take more than a miracle to see the bianconeri side going toe-to-toe with Conte's men to decide the winner.

  • Zlatan set to miss big games due to injury - AC Milan's win over Roma proved to be quite expensive for Pioli's men, as Zlatan Ibrahimovic was subbed off due to a muscular problem. Reports on Monday suggest that "Ibra" will not be able to play for Milan in their next four fixtures, including two Serie A matches taking place this week. With that in mind, saying that the rossoneri's chances od success in both tournaments have taken a serious hit until the Swedish ace returns to the pitch.

Top matches to watch in the Serie A from March 2-8, 2021

The first week of the month will be packed with games in the Italian top-flight, as there will be a midweek matchday taking place between March 2 and March 4. Out of the games that will take place before the weekend, one must highlight the Juventus vs Spezia clash, the Milan vs Udinese tie, and the Parma vs Inter matchup.

The next weekend will also have some matches that will be worth-watching. For starters, the game between Juventus and Lazio will be crucial to their immediate future. Next up, Hellas Verona will face Milan with the rossoneri battling to go back to the top of the table. The last match of the weekend will be the one between league leaders Inter, who will host Atalanta in what should be an entertaining game.
