Manchester City resumes their Premier League campaign on Saturday against fourth-place West Ham United after a mid-week win over Borussia M’gladbach in the first leg of the round of 16 at Puskas Arena.

The Cityzens will be looking for their twentieth win in a row when they host the Hammers at the Etihad on Saturday at 7:30 a.m. ET. The game will be the first of 10 Premier League games this weekend.

Manchester City vs. West Ham – preview

Manchester City will aim to extend their 36-game undefeated streak in all competitions against West Ham United on the weekend. Pep Guardiola’s men have not tasted defeat since Sept. 27, 2020, when they fell to Leicester City 5-2 at home. Since then, the Sky Blues have won all their home games but two that ended in draws against Liverpool and West Brom.

German midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has been key for Guardiola amidst the absence of his favorite playmaker Kevin De Bruyne. The Belgian was sidelined for five Premier League matches with a hamstring injury and, Gundogan filled in for him, scoring six goals and dishing out two assists in that span. De Bruyne played a total of 73 minutes against Everton and Arsenal last week and remained an unused substitute against M’Gladbach on Wednesday. On defense, Manchester City has been a rock, thanks to center-backs John Stones and new boy Ruben Dias. Both Stones and Dias have helped Man City to eight clean sheets in his last ten games.

West Ham United, who sit above Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal in the table, have exceeded all expectations up to this point in the campaign. With 45 points after 25 games, David Moyes’ West Ham sits in fourth place and 20 points clear from the relegation zone. The Hammers are coming off two home wins against Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham and Sheffield United. The London club could end the month of February undefeated with a win or draw at the Etihad on Saturday.

Forward Michael Antonio’s return and the introduction of loanee Jesse Lingard from Manchester United have bolstered the Hammers’ squad in the last month. Lingard inspired a 3-1 win over Aston Villa in his debut for West Ham with a brace. He also scored the game-winning goal against the Hotspurs last Sunday. Another important loanee who has improved the side is center-back Craig Dawson. The 30-year-old has scored two goals, including a game-winner against Crystal Palace, and helped the team to five clean sheets after 10 games since joining in October from Watford. Box-to-box midfielder Tomas Soucek is Moyes’ top scorer with eight goals in the season, proving to be a menace against defenses in set pieces. Led by 22-year-old captain Declan Rice from midfield, West Ham United has enough firepower and will to detain Manchester City.

Manchester City vs. West Ham – Head-to-head

West Ham and Manchester City drew 1-1 in the reverse fixture played at the London Stadium on Oct. 24, 2020. Antonio’s early goal in the first half separated the two sides until 20-year-old Phil Foden was subbed onto the game and scored early in the second half.

All in all, Manchester City has won 58 games against West Ham, while the Hammers have managed 37 victories. Also, the matchup has produced 18 draws.
